Subject: Administrivia: Changes to file lists and abstracts
We have made the following changes to the automatically generated file
lists and abstracts.
o The file lists help/recent-files.txt and help/all-files.txt no longer
contain "./" before the file name.
o The file name column in these lists is properly aligned.
o all-files.txt is sorted by directory and file name, so files in
subdirs will appear after the listing of files in the parent dir.
o Files in recent/ will not appear in either list, and
abstract files will not appear in recent-files.txt.
o The entries in the abstracts are tagged with one of the
following file types:
DIRECTORY, LINK, MACBINARY, BINHEX, TEXT, SHELL_ARC, UUENCODE.
o Abstracts for all files in the archive are generated weekly
instead of monthly.

JCONV-DD -- a JIS<->SJIS<->EUC converter
========================================
FILE: JCONV-DD
ver.: 1.4
Type: Application
Author: Natsu Sakimura
Date: 1993.09.25
System Requirement: System 7.0 or later
Distribution: Freeware
Description:
-----------
JCONV-DD is a drag & drop application which performs
the conversion of JIS, SJIS and EUC files. It
auto-detects the encoding scheme of the file which was
dropped.
Changes in Version 1.4
---------------------
1.4b1 The third release [1993.09.07].
Disabled the progress bar for the smaller files (<5K).
Disabled the "smooth" progress bar for the larger files.
These are for the sake of speed.
Added behavior control mode, i.e. preference setting for
default behavior of JCONV-DD.
Added a modifier key to specify New-JIS for output to
override the user setting.
1.4b2 The Second evolution of version 1.4.
Changed the specification so that it will truncate the
filename of the output when it is too long, so that now
it works even for a very long file name.
1.4b3 The Third evolution of version 1.4. [1993.09.25]
Fixed a bug which caused a crash in System7.0.1 when
using in Command or preference mode.

Subject: [*] KeMo 1.5 - ADB device millisecond timing & other useful stuff
CHANGES
-------
Version 1.5
- Source code now available to registered users. See License section.
- Added the ability to wait for more than one device at a time (waiting for
more than one device decreases the accuracy of the measurement accordingly);
see KeMoSelect() and KeMoWait()
- Added several constant definitions for selecting various combinations of ADB
devices (see KeMoSelect())
- Changed the argument type for KeMoSelect() from short integer to long
integer
(your programs must be recompiled with the new KeMo.h or KeMo.p)
- Added the ability to distinguish between two mouse buttons (tested on
PowerBook trackballs only). See KeMoWait().
- Added the function KeMoDeviceType() to manually set the device types
(keyboard or mouse) when KeMo fails to appropriately categorize a device.
- Added access to two data arrays that contain information about available ADB
devices (see the bottom of KeMo.h and KeMo.p)
- Fixed Quadra and PowerBook incompatibilities (incompatibilities fixed in
KeMoInit() and KeMoSync())
For changes in previous versions (1.03 and earlier) see README file.
INTRODUCTION
------------
This package is essentially a set of functions to help writing reaction time
experiments on the Mac, the KeMo Reaction Timing Utilities. Functionality
currently consists of the following:
- a timer with 20 microsecond resolution
- polling functions for ADB devices, such as keyboards and mice, with +/-1.4
to
+/-2.1 msec accuracy, depending on your Mac (as opposed to the +/- 8 to +/-16
msec accuracy that you get with "normal" Toolbox functions like GetKeys)
- a screen refresh synchronization function for all Macs
- functions that hide and show the menu bar
- a function to make all other applications quit (System 7 required)
Before I get too many comments like "the Mac is not a real-time machine" let
me
put in my disclaimer: this software-only approach does not guarantee the
accuracy claimed above in all conditions. Various factors like disk access
and
network activity can cause loss of accuracy. But this lack of accuracy can be
avoided with careful programming and by using Macs that are not doing certain
other things and running other programs at the same time they are doing
reaction timing. See "Accuracy Issues" in the Users' Guide for more
discussion
of this.
These routines are packaged in a library file which can be incorporated into
your program, together with header files for C and Pascal. Additionally, a
sample program that exercises all of the functions is included with source
code
in C.
KeMo's ADB (Apple Desktop Bus) polling functions only work on Macs with
ADB's.
These include all Macs sold by Apple after the Mac Plus. In addition, all
functions require System Version 6.0.5 or later. If using Think Pascal, you
must use Think Pascal version 3.0 or later.
The KeMo set of functions is distributed as "Old World Order/Recession-ware":
there is a shareware registration fee of $20 unless you can't afford it, or
can't get U.S. dollars. You may not use KeMo to write commercial or shareware
programs without prior permission. See the license terms in the Users' Guide
for more details.
Source code is available for free to registered users ($10 shipping/handling
if
you need me to send you stuff by physical mail, prepaid).
You may contact Dan Costin, the author, at dcostin@ucsd.edu or
dcostin@ucsd.bitnet, or P.O. Box 13214, La Jolla, CA 92039-3214. Support is
on a time-available basis.

Subject: [*] PowerScan 2.0
Dear Netters,
This is version 2.0 of my shareware application PowerScan. It is used to scan
disks and can save, print, filter, find duplicate files and more. This version
is a complete rewrite from scratch with *many* new features:
* Support for Apple's Thread Manager! Yes, PowerScan will now run several
scan and find duplicates operations concurrently, even when in background.
Thread Manager is not included in the archive so you'll have to download
it separately from e.g. ftp.apple.com. Highly recommended!
* Greatly improved filtering. In addition to the type and creator filters
available in version 1.0, this version also handles filename, size,
creation and modification dates in any combination. Filter components can
be grouped.
* Support for external plug-in modules. Filters can be installed just by
dropping them in a folder. Also supports external pre-processors such
as the included Compact Pro archive scanner. A StuffIt preprocessor is
in the works.
* All new user interface. Select font and size for display and printing,
resizable columns, new floating palette where most settings can be
accessed.
* Saving and printing. PowerScan can now save and open directory listings.
Print options include margins, print font and header. On-screen print
preview is included.
* Many small improvements. Send select/open Apple Events to the Finder,
movable dialog boxes, better Search function, apply filter after
scanning...
PowerScan 2.0 requires System 7 or later. It is shareware $10. Included in
the package is a user's manual and parts of the programmer's documentation
(i.e. how to write a pre-processor; I will upload the filter docs when they
are finished).

Hello all.
I hope this is not a FAQ, but I couldn't find the answer in my
IM Digest archives.
I need, I think, to upgrade the memory on a Mac LC II with
4MB currently installed. I understand the rules about types,
sizes, kinds, varieties, speeds, etc for the SIMMS. What I
need to know is: with PC/Compatible SIMMS work in the system.
The reason I ask is that the latter is 20% cheaper locally than
the best mail order Mac memory place I have found.
Any thoughts from the net gurus?

Subject: Creating a FrankenMac
Dear Netfolk:
At work we've been trying to beg borrow or steal a Macintosh for over
a year now. At long last it looks like we might be able to get *most*
of one. Another department has an old II hanging around that they've
been using for spare parts. It has a replaced logic board, no floppy
drive, no memory, and no monitor. We've also got a Cogent workstation
(all these are good for is spare parts!) that we want to use to patch
up the Mac. We know that Cogents are Nubus based so the monitor and
ethernet cards are compatible. What we want to find out is if we can
use the memory and the floppy drive. The floppy drive is an 800K drive
from Sony, model MP-F53W-11F with a *34* pin cable. Can this be adapted
to work with the Mac? The SIMMs are 30 pin, 9 chip modules that look
about the right size. Each chip has the following on the front of it:
___ 81C1000-12
F
___ 8825 C06
Japan
PJ
The "F" thing looks like a manufacturer's logo but I don't recognize it
. Can you help us put together a FRANKENSTEIN Mac? Any help or pointers wo\
would be helpful. BTW, I have Larry Pina's old book but he is primarily
concerned with using *authorized* parts, I couldn't find what I was looking
for there.

There was a question raised by Johan Solve <Johan.Solve@itn.hh.se>
about his DUO experiencing occasional mouse/keyboard freeze-ups. I
have also had the same problem and it happens only when the DUO is
in the Dock.
I called Apple this morning, 800-767-2775, and asked about the problem.
The person on the phone was most helpful and told me it was a known
problem. It has to do with the new "Apple Destop Bus mouse II" (the
round smooth mouse) which came with the DUO Dock.
The Support person said he expected a software correction would be
available at the end of October. It will be a new version of the
System Enabler 201. He said it would be on AppleLink and I assume that
also means FTP.Apple.Com.

Since my configuration is: LC III 20/160 with the international

Now, trying to print any document from any application on Image

they answered that I have to increase the memory allocation of the program

and it seems that Fetch has a bit of a problem with it. Fetch
is unable to show any of the directories, it can only show files.
We've exchanged e-mails with Dartmouth (Fetch's home) about this
and they have suggested that we look for other FTP server packages
other than the Clarkson one we're using (PC Resident FTP 2.2TN/TC-D server.)
Apparently, this version can not deal with the NLST command.
I wonder if any netters are operating DOS based FTP servers that work
properly with Fetch? If so, I would like to know what server package
you are using.
I might add that other DOS clients and Unix clients do not have trouble
accessing the FTP server and seeing the directories. The problem
seems to be unique to Fetch.

I offer this to pay back a little of what I have taken from the net.
I installed LaserWriter 8 (v. 8.1.1). All went well for a few days until
while attaching some test equipment I had a crash. On rebooting a could not
print or select Page Setup without geting an Error -39. I could use other
printer drivers (8.0, ImageWriter, etc.) but not LaserWriter 8. It also did
not matter what printer I was going to.
I said "OK, I will just reinstall the beast." NOT! Same results. Then my
puzzler really got sore. I do a lot of consulting and I had a client in with
infected disks just before which I cleaned up using Disinfectant (I
genuflect toward Northwestern). I knew I could not get infected but I said
"What the heck lets check it out." I was not infected but Disinfectant told
be that the LaserWriter 8 Prefs file was damaged!! I trashed it, re-selected
LaserWriter 8 and all was well.
The moral to this story is if you get a -39 error trying to use LaserWriter
8 or when selecting Page Setup try throwing away your LaserWriter 8 Prefs
file.

Request to all Mac users:
I am in the process of challenging (on legal grounds) various
copy-protection schemes employed by the software industry. I need a
couple of things from the Mac user community.
1. I would appreciate responses from those of you who night be
willing to assist me in this endeavor. I'm talking about
possibly writing a few brief letters to selected companies--that
sort of thing (nothing big, and no major commitment of time or
effort). I'm not presently asking for a commitment or for any
action--I just want to obtain a list of persons who would be
willing to be contacted by me in this regard at a later time
(with the understanding that you might then opt not to
participate).
2. I also need to hear from you regarding any negative or trying
experiences (past or present) you have had with copy-protected
software. Please be as specific as possible regarding details
(Mac configuration; software publisher, product, and version;
description of the problem and actions taken in response; etc.).
I'm not sure what cooperation I'm going to receive in the legal

have a big impact with only a little effort, so I hope you all will be

Here's something that used to be a problem with Word, was fixed, and now has
cropped up again:
Try formatting a document in New Century Schoolbook, 8 pt., justified,
Fractional Widths On (2-column, but I don't think that matters).
Now look closely at the alignment on the right--it's noticeably ragged!
(though not as much as flush left)
Using Word 5.1a, System 7.1, Adobe Type Manager 3.6 with the Adobe screen and
outline fonts, LaserWriter Pro 630, and any of the version 8 LaserWriter
drivers.
With LaserWriter 7.2, the alignment is acceptable.
(When I complained about this to Microsoft last time it happened with Word 4,
they recommended using PageMaker....)
A note on the lingo: A typesetting expert taught me never to say
"right justified." The correct term is just "justified," meaning evenly
spaced text with right AND left margins aligned.

I have a Quadra 800 with 24Mb memory and a 500Mb hard disk, running

Restarting the Quadra without extensions reduces the usage to around
18.5 Mb. I have reformatted the disk with Apple HD SC Setup and reduced

2) Is there two varieties of Radius TPD? i.e. B/W or Greyscale.
3) How does the Radius card know what screen it's connected to, or indeed, if
there's one there at all? It does know these things - if there's no screen

Subject: RAM disk danger
I had a very interesting experience working with a user that I thought
might benefit the Info-Mac community.
This guy wanted to re-partition his hard disk on a Quadra 950. He
discovered that he couldn't do it without booting to another disk, so he
configured a RAM disk with the system and Apple HD SC Setup. He booted to
the RAM disk and re-partitioned the hard disk.
As you would expect, he ran into problems with this un-orthodox procedure.
By the time he called me, his machine wouldn't boot and was showing a disk
icon with a question mark. This didn't surprise me, but what _did_ surprise
me was that he couldn't boot even from a floppy.
As we all know, if you boot from a floppy with a valid system folder, the
Mac will use it instead of the hard disk. In this case, however, the badly
corrupted hard disk was hanging up the startup process before it got to the
floppy.
No problem, I thought, because there is a special startup key sequence to
get the Mac to ignore the hard disk altogether. This sequence is
Command-Option-Shift-Delete. (The real reason to do this is to force a boot
from a device that is not a floppy, like a CD ROM) When he tried this, the
Mac got through the flashing disk icon, but then displayed a sad Mac. It
never appeared to read the floppy disk (he was trying to boot from a
confirmed disk tools disk).
To make a long story short, on advice from a colleague of mine, I advised
the guy to physically disconnect his hard disk and try to boot. This
worked, but only when he held down Command-Option-Shift-Delete. When he
finally booted to disk tools he was surprised to find that the RAM disk was
still there. Apparently, the presence of the RAM disk was screwing up the
boot-up process. He got rid of the RAM disk, shut the computer down,
plugged in the hard drive, and was finally able to boot.
All this goes to show that RAM disks can be dangerous. I tried setting up a
RAM disk at one point when I had a Quadra 700 with 68 megs of RAM, but I
stopped using it because my Mac would crash and burn every five minutes. Is
something about Apple's System 7 RAM disk seriously buggy? Don't know, but
I'll avoid them.

Sorry for the delay in answering.
This problem is caused by the 1st Syquest's driver being loaded into
memory. When the Syquest formatted with different software is inserted,
it can't mount because the wrong driver is in memory. You can override
this by mounting with a utility which formats Syquests and hard drives
such as Silverlining, APS Utilities, etc. More efficient for this, however,
is SCSI Probe which is a cdev that can be used for mounting. Also, it can
be configured to purge the driver when a syquest is ejected. SCSI Probe
is almost certainly in the Sumex archives and the mirrors.-Pete Tamas

SpeechManager is the init that allows your mac to speak and read test files.
Macintalk Pro (also called Plaintalk) is a smarter "brain" for the speech
capability, and it includes higher-quality voices than SpeechManager. All
the same, you need SpeechManager even if you get Macintalk Pro. It will not
operate by itself.

I don't think so. The programs announce and broadcast both send text
messages. Quoting from UMich:
announce1.0 8/16/92
Application and extension that performs the same thing as
Broadcast 2.0. Allows across-the-net (AppleTalk) announcement
messages that do not interrupt the recipients
or their work. System 7 friendly.
A program that may have a better chance of doing what Steve wants is:
communicator2.0 8/3/92
Sends sounds (which you can record with your microphone) or
text to another, listening-in-the-background Macintosh on
your AppleTalk network.
But the description only implies that it sends to a single machine.

Subject: Z-modem on Unix (Q)
Hello,
After downloading zmodem-part...-unix.shar from the comm directory, I compiled
it following the part relating to sysvr3 in the Makefile. No problem, nice
compilation.
However, when I tried to transfer a file to test whether it was working, no
luck. The weird thing though is that ZTerm recognizes a z-modem transfer when
I
initiate a 'sz ...' in Irix, and so does Irix when ZTerm sends a 'rz ...'. But
after the window showing the transfer stats, nothing happens at all. Complete
blank until timeout.
Any ideas what could go wrong ? Thanks
BTW: we have here a SGI Irix system 5 and I connect from home with the Express
Modem and Zterm.

I'm one of those poeple dependent on the mail
server(LISTSERV@ricevm1.rice.edu). Due to a screwup in writing my commands
and the inclusion of a .sig, I lost access for a while, but got it back
yesterday. I sent for the list of all files, and got back a 72 page list of
full of this-
*NOTHELD *NOROOM 0 92/08/10
*NOTHELD *TOOOLD* 0 92/05/05
*NOTHELD *NOROOM 0 93/05/08
Does this mean that the mail server is no longer serving?
Is there a replacement?
Help! Help!
